Summer 2010 - Watch the World Cup at WEST and enjoy the beer garden.
The real WESTies amongst you will know that our team here in the Templeton Building on Glasgow Green is a pretty eclectic mix of people.
We have a Scottish /English /Aussie brewery team, a Scottish /English / Polish /Arabic kitchen team, a Dutch General Manager, several pretty German ladies serving you in our beerhall and of course there is always the German Kaiser herself, who makes sure things run smoothly at Scotland’s Premium lager brewery.
We all love football here at WEST (to various degrees!) but we love WEST beer even more, so what better way to watch some footie action than on the BIG SCREEN in the brewery’s Hop Room with a cool & crisp pint of WEST St. Mungo lager and a soft pretzel (or make that a few pints and a yummy Schnitzel!).
As of Monday 14 June 2010, we will show most of the World Cup football games (there are some days on which we are unable to show games as we will be closed to the public for weddings – details of which are listed here or simply call us on 0141 550 0135) on the BIG SCREEN.
So come one down to WEST and support your team (or whatever team you like better that day!) and enjoy the best Glasgow beer garden, finest lagers and wheat beers … and of course some hearty German cuisine.
January 2010 - A new busy year ahead at WEST with the upcoming Comedy Festival, speed dating on Valentines Day, not to mention the Frank Sinatra tribute act!

WEST strikes
Gold, Gold, Gold!
It’s not only Sir Chris Hoy who knows what it feels like to bag three gold medals, for now WEST, the Glasgow Green based independent brewery, has equalled the achievement of Scotland’s greatest ever Olympian by winning three gold medals from the DLG, the prestigious Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft (German Agricultural Society).
This is the first time that any lager brewed in the UK has received a medal from the DLG, which awards bronze, silver or the much-coveted gold medal depending on the quality of the produce – and WEST has achieved triple gold medal status at the first attempt. WEST MD Petra Wetzel said, “As a German brewery based in Glasgow, I am particularly proud that WEST is the first brewery in the UK to be recognised by such a respected organisation as the DLG.
We have always known that we produce beer of the best quality at WEST, but such recognition has surpassed all our expectations and is a great credit to the talents and efforts of our head brewer, Matt Doswell and his assistant brewer Adam Mincher.”
Founded in 1885, the DLG has over 20,000 members and is a leading organisation in the agricultural and food sectors with a mandate to promote technical and scientific progress. The DLG leads quality assessment in Europe and is accredited in accordance with international norms. The ‘DLG Award Winner’ label is issued only to foods and drinks that have been found worthy in sensory testing and that satisfy the DLG’s stringent quality criteria, which include careful selection of raw materials as well as optimal processing and preparation.
WEST feature in 'Homecoming Scotland' TV Programme
We are delighted that German TV station ZDF (the German equivalent of the BBC) featured WEST in a recent brief documentary on “Homecoming Scotland”. The clip you can view here is in German (so you non-German speakers... get your dictionaries out!) but they say a picture is worth a thousand words and we thought you might like to see this!
Since having been awarded 3 gold medals by the German DLG (more of that below!) for our St. Mungo lager, our WEST Dunkel and our WEST Hefeweizen, we have attracted quite a bit of interest from our fellow German brewers in how we produce beers in accordance with the German Purity law here in Glasgow and who knows, we may be exporting WEST to Germany in the near future...

WEST Re-launch Party
celebrated by 350 guests On the 1st May 2008 WEST celebrated its re-launch with a fabulous party in its brewery, bar and restaurant on Glasgow Green. The WEST re-launch party, pictured above, was attended by some 350 guests who celebrated the dramatic reversal in fortunes of Glasgow's unique brewery which, under new ownership, has gone from strength to strength.
Addressing the assembled guests, Petra Wetzel said, “The last few months have been somewhat challenging for us here at WEST, but we’re back with a vengeance and the team here are absolutely determined to make sure that WEST finally gets recognised for brewing the best beer in Scotland, if not Britain , and for our
fantastic venue to become an integral part of the bar and restaurant scene, renowned not just for its beer, but also its food, fabulous live entertainment, atmosphere and service."
“We have really exciting times ahead of us at the moment – big plans for the brewery. We have just secured distribution of our beers to a whole raft of major outlets and in a couple of months we’ll be bottling our beer, so don’t forget your trolley when shopping at Tesco" Styling itself on the beers of Bavaria, WEST’s products are the only beers in the UK that meet the Reinheitsgebot, German legislation which ensures only the finest, purest beer is deemed fit for consumption.
Please contact Petra Wetzel at
for further information on future developments at WEST.
