Our premium red lager, Munich Red, received the top prize for Best Lager at last Thursday’s Scottish Beer Awards. Our beloved beer triumphed over 15 other finalists across a number of other Scottish breweries, as well as more of our own beers.
Now in its fourth year, the Scottish Beer Awards is an independent awards programme that recognises achievements in the brewing industry across Scotland. 297 beers were entered into the awards, undergoing a blind tasting by a panel of 28 judges which included some of the UK’s leading beer and brewing experts.
“Beer quality, purity, flavour and drinkability are all paramount to us at WEST. For Munich Red to have been awarded Best Lager in what was a blind tasting, means that it was judged on those elements alone. To be recognised for the things we work so hard to deliver, and by a group of highly respected individuals from our industry, is a huge compliment and a great achievement for our team”. – Simon Roberts, Head Brewer.
The winning lager, Munich Red, is a 4.9% ABV premium red lager, which is brewed to WEST’s own unique recipe. It contains a high proportion of toasted malted barley, which gives the beer its unique colour, smooth and creamy body, and sweet biscuit flavour. It’s a lager that may convert even the staunchest ale aficionado.
Our flagship St. Mungo lager was given a bronze award in the same category and our GPA, German Pale Ale, received bronze in the Best British-style Ale category. This is a great achievement for the WESTies in our brewing team.
